It was a successful weekend in Missouri. A record breaking number of Republicans in the state held their annual Lincoln Days celebrations. Governor Blunt’s service was honored and Governor Barbour delivered a rousing keynote address.
The big news came when Lt. Governor Peter Kinder decided to bow out of the gubernatorial primary and run for re-election as Lt. Governor. Republicans in the state strongly applauded his choice knowing how important it is for the party to be united in order to beat Jay Nixon. There are now two Republicans in the race, Congressman Kenny Hulshof and Treasurer Sarah Steelman.
In Washington, Dino Rossi is gearing up for a “big-money battle” with the incumbent governor, Christine Gregoire. Dino Rossi has $1.6 million on hand; Gregoire has around $3 million on hand after already spending $1.6 million on research and consulting. Rossi said, “She's done a lot of polling, trying to figure out what to say and how to say it…I actually know what I want to do and what I'm going to say and how I'm going to do it.” Gregoire has also been criticized for the rapid increase in spending for the state budget and it seems her campaign is no different.
Gregoire is now not allowed to fundraise while the legislature is in session, while Rossi can continue his fundraising.
