Following the money has seldom led to winners in this year’s GOP primaries and caucuses. In only 12 of the 34 states that had voted by the end of last week did the most votes go to the candidate who had raised the most money in that state by the end of last year.
And the victor in nine of those dozen contests, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney , isn’t even in the race anymore. Neither is former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani , who led the fundraising in 15 of the states — but ended up not winning any of them.
